Description
This one is a jaw-dropper. Not only the very early, huge mark, but also the size!Art pottery is not my area of expertise, but I love to research, so this description is the best of my understanding.
Collectors may know more about the pattern name and artist, but I did do my homework. :)
ZSOLNAY Vilmos PECS very early, large stamp on bottom with 5 towers
Beautiful signature script additionally has initials TTM
Form number 518 clearly marked on bottom over a line with DIII underneath.
ZP Pottery numerical history of their forms would place this firmly between 1873-1882 as those dates encompass forms numbered 1-845
Further research of the actual mark style design with the 5 towers and size led me to narrow the date to 1878-1879
Using that, I looked for an example of what the design or pattern might have been called
While I found no exact twin of this design, a very similar design in the museum was called "Persian" and dated 1879-81
Those seem to line up. Some are also called Ottoman or Turkish influence, I'll leave that up to the collector and buyer to discern.
This piece is in ASTOUNDING condition for age. Most pieces I found of this age sold for good money even with cracks, chips, & repairs.
I can find NO chips, NO repairs. None on the pedestal either. Perfect. Beautiful design even on the underside around base!
There is only one little flaw on inside of the bowl and it obviously happened at the time the bowl was made. Very minor.
It is a line of about an inch long, not a crack. You can see it in the pic of the bowl interior. No crazing in the bowl or on sides.
On the bottom side you can see how the piece was made as a barely perceptible raised line runs on the middle seam.
Slightly off to the side of one side of the underside seams, is a small star pattern of crazing lines.
It actually is perfectly formed like a Christmas star tree topper or an atomic star look. Not a big deal at all, very minor and on bottom.
Colors are a dark indigo blue, cornflower blue, pink-rosy peony, yellowish tan (umber), stormy grey and gold gilt outlines with luminosity.
It actually seems alive and changing in color depending on how the light hits it and if you are turning it in your hands.
This would be THE centerpiece to die for at your table or in a place of pride & prominence in your collection.
It is much bigger than most all the ZP pieces I see for sale. I watch enough Antiques Roadshow to know bigger is better in *most* cases.
