Very Rare Large Wemyss Pottery Button with hand painted Dog's Head Portrait, most likely decorated by Karel Nekola. Fife, Scotland Circa 1900, 4.3 centimeters diameter.

Very Rare Oversize Wemyss Button
Dog's Head Portrait
Hand Painted by Karel Nekola
Fife, Scotland Circa 1900
On offer here is this extremely rare Wemyss Pottery button delightfully and unusually hand painted with a portrait of a dog's head, by Karel Nekola.
The portrait depicts a tan and black dog with a greying muzzle which is set against a celadon green ground. Accent splashes of pale blue enamel appear as highlights on the dog's fur.
Impressed mark in capital letters to the reverse; WEMYSS, together with 3 pad
(firing kiln)
marks and a pierced, raised arch facilitating fixing as a button.
Wemyss Ware
was a line of pottery first produced in 1882 by Czech decorator Karel Nekola and Fife pottery-owner Robert Heron. The pottery took its name from the Wemyss family, titled incumbents of Wemyss Castle on the east coast of Fife, who were early and enthusiastic patrons of Nekola and Heron's ceramic creations.
The Queen Mother was a great fan of Wemyss, and is said to have amassed one of the largest private collections.

As is typical with all Wemyss ware - the glaze is lightly crackled.
There are no chips, cracks, flakes or any enamel losses.
Just shy of 1¾ inches (4.3 cm) diameter
